Semrush Review: A Comprehensive Guide
Semrush has many characteristics; as I described earlier, I have listed some of the essential Semrush features below to simplify your use.
1. Evaluate Your Website
It’s still best to examine how your site is doing on different metrics before beginning competitive research.
Here are the top three points you need to know about your website:
- Most organic search terms
- Positions in organic query
- Number of backlinks in total
Semrush will help you collect all of this crucial data in a couple of minutes.
The Domain Overview report from Semrush will give you a broad overview of your website and your rivals’ performance.
You should save the data in an Excel or CSV format for further usage.
The report will provide you with a summary of how the site performs in paid and organic search results, backlinks, organic and paid keywords, and much more.
Tap on “Backlinks” in the sidebar menu to see your backlinks. The number of referring domains, kinds of backlinks (text, graphic, form, etc.), and a percentage break of following vs Nofollow links are shown here.
2. Make a list of your organic competitors
Semrush Traffic Analytics is a market intelligence and competitive research tool to provide traffic estimations on both desktop and mobile of any website.
One of the most important aspects of leading search results is figuring out who the organic competitors are. Understanding what the rivals are doing and then doing it much better is the goal here.
Type your domain name into the Semrush search bar, pick “Organic Research” from the drop-down menu, and click the “Search” button to find out who your organic competitors are.
Visit the “Competitors” tab in the organic analysis report to learn more about the competitors.
The Competitive Positioning Map, a graphic illustration of where your website stands against your rivals, would be the first thing you see.
You’ll see bubbles in various locations on the map focused on organic keywords and organic traffic.
The more keywords ranking, the more it will feature on the map to the right. Sites that get a lot of organic traffic will also show up higher on the map.
You can see the organic keywords and traffic for each of the bubbles by hovering over them.
The organic competitors’ table can be found by scrolling down.
Keep an eye on the following stats
- Popular Keywords
- SE Keywords
- Keywords with a High Level of Competition
These three indicators will show your nearest rivals who you’ll want to outshine in search engines.
3. Keyword Research
Keyword summary, keyword magic tool, keyword complexity ranking, and other features are available in this segment of Semrush.
It will show you various metrics such as keyword length, CPC, competitiveness, and a number of outcomes. It also indicates term match and associated keyword ideas, as well as all of their metrics.
The keyword’s trend graph is also shown to let you know if the keyword is worth performing for soon and set the best targets for predicting traffic from the keyword over the year.
It also shows a list of SERP outcomes for a particular keyword.
Keyword Magic Tool is also available in Semrush. This tool finds broad matches, phrase matches, exact matches, and similar keywords for your original keyword.
Question is a special segment that lets you identify questions in the form of long-tail keywords.
This will greatly assist you in creating FAQ sections for your blog to be included on Google Knowledge Graph and rank for a variety of similar keywords.
Key metrics such as volume, difficulty, CPC, and others are shown for all keywords.
You may also use Semrush’s filters to narrow down the keywords it returns.
It also shows the SERP features that are available for the keyword and a trend graph.
Semrush now has an Organic Traffic Insights feature. It allows you to analyze which keywords are bringing traffic to your website.
You must link your Google Analytics and Search Console accounts with Semrush for this functionality to operate properly. It will import the data, merge it with Semrush’s data knowledge, and provide you with a much more optimized view of your search data.
4. Semrush’s Content Marketing Toolkit
Semrush offers a wide range of ‘content marketing’ tools in addition to keyword research resources (if you are on a ‘Guru’ package or higher).
You can use them to:
- Identify new areas to write about
- Perform an SEO audit on your current content
- Evaluate the keywords that your rivals use in their posts and keep track of any references to your brand.
5. Link Building
The first method is Backlink Analytics, which comes with Link Building.
SEMrush can show all backlinks, anchor texts, referring domains, referring IPs, indexed pages, opponents, and different link-based metrics for every domain name or URL you provide.
Semrush has an excellent Backlink Audit feature if you want to do a backlink audit on your website.
Your search visibility will suffer as a result of the spammy harmful backlinks.
Backlink auditing should be done regularly, particularly if you actively create backlinks and secure yourself from negative SEO.
6. Perform a Site Audit and Correct Any Errors
Semush’s site audit feature allows you to do a diagnostic search on your website to find and resolve the most troublesome on-page SEO and technical SEO problems.
Click “Add New Project,” enter details and click “Setup Site Audit” in order to conduct a site audit on Semrush.
Errors highlighted in red are the most critical SEO problems your site is currently facing and should be resolved as soon as possible.
Choose the number of pages SemrushBot wishes to crawl, skip all other steps and click on the Start Site Audit button.
Depending on the number of pages you choose, this can take a few minutes.
Semrush presents a report that shows a percentage of SEO health in your site and highlights errors and warnings that can hurt your SEO.
7. On-Page & Technical SEO
It examines the site’s configuration, internal linking, broken connections, crawl depth, speed, and other factors.
This section includes resources including SEO content template, on-page SEO verifier, log file analyzer (advanced crawl analysis), listing management, and features in addition to their Website audit tool.
Their On-Page SEO Checker assists us in importing and analyzing our website’s web pages for SEO.
It measures your content, keywords, and backlinks to those of your rivals. Then, it provides you with actionable recommendations for improving your content.
8. PPC Analysis
You can use Semrush to keep track of the keywords your opponents are using, their SERP scores, and even a preview of their ad copy.
This way, you can refine your own PPC ad copy and maximize the effect of your landing pages.
Semrush allows you to maintain the list of your competitor targeted keywords, their ranks in SERPs, and even look at ad copies.
In this approach, you may copy your own PPC ads and make the greatest effect of your landing pages.
Monitoring your PPC ads is an important step in keeping your competition one step ahead of you.

9. Customer support
Semrush offers three customer service options: call, email, and chat. This is in contrast to rival brands, which do not always have phone service.
Semrush’s contact information is prominently displayed on the website. In addition, a support chatbox is visible in the corner of every page and a phone number placed in the footer.
Semrush provides support mainly through their knowledge base and email. They also conduct webinars regularly where they unveil new feature updates and provide some actionable tips to improve your SEO.
Semrush Pricing Plans
Semrush has a variety of plans for various use cases, and you can choose the one that best suits your needs.
- Pro plan – $119.95/month
- Guru plan – $229.95/month
- Business plan – $449.95/month
All three are recurring subscriptions.
The PRO account is best if you’re an individual (you’ll get a full report). However, if you’re a newcomer fresh to search engine marketing (SEM) research, the free trial is indeed a good place to start.
The Guru package for Agencies includes all of the necessary things, including Branded PDF files.
Suppose you have become used to its different features. In that case, you can upgrade to a PRO account to get a complete, descriptive review on every website (including your own and your rivals’).
The Bottom Line
It’s simple to understand why so many business professionals and influencers depend on Semrush tool once you get started with it. Semrush’s team is still developing innovative and creative ways to do keyword research and market analysis, making it one of the most powerful SEO tools available.
Ahrefs, SimilarWeb, SERPstat are the closest competitors to SEMrush. The Moz was considered to be an alternative, but today it lacks a lot of features.
So that wraps up my review of Semrush. I suggest you try the tool for free yourself and see how it improves your site’s SEO.
